Kurdistan Region: 14% of under 25s are unemployed

Some 14 percent of 15-24-year-olds in Kurdistan region are unemployed, the majority are women, the UNIDO's survey revealed.

 

An unemployed rate in Kurdistan region rose by 0.5% in 2017 due to the economic crisis and political instability in the region over past 4 years. The unemployed rate in the region was only 5% in 2013.

 

According to the survey conducted by United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) in Kurdistan region, The rate of unemployment among young people between the ages of 15 and 29 is 14percent, 69 percent of whom are women, and 24 percent are men.

 

in the meantime, in May the International Monetary Fund (IMF) said that Iraq‌s youth unemployment rate had reached more than 40 percent.
High unemployment and increasing government corruption have led thousands to take to the streets to demand the government take action and improve living conditions.

 

Kurdistan region suffers from a financial crisis that appeared at the beginning of 2014 when KRG decided to export its oil independently. The move caused the major problem after the Iraqi government denied the federal budget share of the KRG.
