Gorran: extending the term of parliament and postponing the general elections are illegal

Today, 24th of October Kurdistan parliament extended its current term by eight months, which mean automatically that Kurdistan general elections have been postponed until June next year.

The postpone made by three political parties which were Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), Kurdistan Islamic Union(KIU) and Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), and the session boycotted by The Change Movement(Gorran), the Kurdistan Islamic Group(Komal)  and four MPs from PUK faction.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - A preliminary agreement has been reached between three major Kurdish parties to postpone parliamentary and presidential elections by eight months and extend the current term of parliament until election day, said an official on Tuesday.

Gorran condemned the action and stated that the extension is illegal and illegitimate.

The KDP and PUK justify the extension by current uncertain atmosphere and the escalated tension between Baghdad and Erbil.

It has to be mentioned that earlier today, the Change Movement (Gorran), the Kurdistan Islamic Group, and the Coalition for Democracy and Justice made a joint statement and called for dissolving the current government, dissolving the Kurdistan Region Presidency, establishing a provisional government to talk to Baghdad over the various disputes and preparing for a fair and free elections.

The call declined by Kurdistan Democratic Party, while the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan made no comment yet.
